The basis of many poker games at home tables and in casino felts around the globe is Stud and Draw Poker.
Basic poker isn't as difficult as people think. There are usually two types of poker: Stud Poker and Draw Poker. Both are described here.
Stud Poker gives each player five cards (or seven in some cases). Players evaluate their hands' relative strength and then wager chips accordingly. If someone is willing, they will match the player's wager. The two remaining players (or more) will then reveal their cards. The best hand wins all the chips.
Draw Poker gives each player five cards. Then, a round begins with betting. The remaining players can then trade up to three cards in order to improve their hands and get a new deck. If a player has an Ace he may trade all four cards for another Ace if he so wishes.
The rounds of betting are structured as follows: Each player has four options, starting to the left side of the dealer.
Raise -- A player who believes he is in a good position (or wants other players believing so) can increase the amount of wager required to keep playing.
Fold -- A player who believes his hand is not good enough for winning and does not wish to bet the extra amount can lay down his cards. He won't win, but he can lose no more chips.
Call -- Each player must call after raising the stakes.
Check -- If the wager is not increased, the player may check or pass on his choice to place a bet.
Although there are many poker variations, most of the games follow the same rules. Each player typically receives five to seven cards. The goal of poker players is to create the best five-card poker hands possible. There is a hierarchy of poker hands for every game. The better hands are more rare and difficult to form than the lower hands.
The rank of individual cards is from best to worst. A tie is broken when two players reach the same hand with the same rank card. The Ace is considered the most valuable card. It goes down from there: Jack, King and Queen, 10, 9, 8, 7, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3
The hand ranking, starting at the lowest value and ending at the highest:
High card. If a combination cannot be found, the hand of the player is valued at one card. If two players hold the same high card, the tie is broken by the player with the second highest card.
Example: 5-8 10 Q A
One Pair. When you have two cards from the same deck, a pair is formed.
Example: 9-9-5 8 K
Two Pairs. Two pairs.
Example: 9 9 5 5 8
Three of a type
Example: 9 9 9 5 8
Straight. Straights are a five-card hand that consists of a continuous sequence of cards. If there are two straights, the higher card wins.
Example: 9-10 JQ K
Flush. A flush is when all five of the cards in a hand belong to the same suit. If two players have the same suit, it is a flush. The player with the highest card wins.
Example: Q K 7 9 5
Full House. Full House refers to a hand that has both three-of-a kind and a pair.
Example: 9 9 9 5 5
Four of a Kind. If you're lucky enough to have four of the same number, you can have a very powerful hand.
Example: 9 9 9 9 5
Straight Flush. Straight Flush is even rarer than four-of-a-kind. A straight flush is five consecutive cards of the same suit.
Example: 9-10 J Q K
Royal Flush. This is the most famous hand. It's made up of a Straight Flush, which runs to Ace. The odds of getting this hand are as high as 1 out 650,000.
Example: 10 JQK A

You can play these games with your children, but without any money or chips. Then, let them try to recognize the hands and play correctly. Younger children often just enjoy playing for chips with no money. Just winning is not enough.

The fancy stuff that comes with poker is what older kids love about it. If you bring out real poker chips, they will love it. It makes a friendly game at home feel more like an event. The chips should not be worth anything, but a small reward should be given to the person with the most chips. The whole family will enjoy the game.
Card games provide endless entertainment for the whole family. Scott McNeely's Ultimate Book of Card Games will bring joy to everyone, regardless of age, household, and anyone with a deck of cards and a lot of time. Find the perfect gift idea for the game-loving person in your family here.
