Francis: No time for rumours, Flames GM says priority is signing Sam Bennett

Francis: No time to rumours. Flames General Manager says signing Sam Bennett is priority

Treliving, who was the Arizona assistant GM for 11 of Doan’s twenty-years in Arizona, stated that it was his 18th birthday and that he sent me a package with a jersey.

"There was a touching message inside and a nice inscription written on the jersey. It basically said, "along the way, you meet good persons and thank-you." It was very meaningful.

"Then (on Wednesday), we hear that he is retiring. My wife calls me with the news. She asks if the gift was because he knew he was going to retire.

We finally solved the case.

While Doan may not have been trying to get one last spin on NHL hockey ice, you can bet Iginla (or Jagr) are.

Fans from Calgary rallied to the cause of Flames Hall of Fame-free agents signing with their team.

The Flames will still have $4.5 million to sign either veteran, even with Sam Bennett being signed as a restricted agent. Although they are both 45 and 40 years old, it is easy to see the attraction of Jagr or Iginla signing.

Treliving stated, for the first time, that he didn't know the source of all the talk. He also said that he had never made a statement stating that they were looking at "so-and-so".

Both are Hall of Famer. Jarome Iginla has been a Calgary player more than anyone else. It's hard not to respect them. They are rumours, and I don't intend to comment.

"Are we going camping with the group we have? You have a good chance. Is it possible to look at some things, and find more before we camp? Yes.

"Is it a guarantee?" No.

"I would not say there is anything significant on the Horizon, but we look every day at everything."

Bennett's long-running contract talks are quite surprising, considering that comparable contracts suggest he's likely to make between $2.5 and 3 million annually.

Treliving, Treliving's 21-year old third-line centre and fourth overall pick in 2014, said that "We're going get Sam signed."

Every contract is different and each one takes its own course. We're still working on it and believe Sam will continue to be a great player for this organization. He's improving and I know he had an enjoyable summer. We'll keep at it.

Similar holds true for Mikael Brücklund, whose stock rose last year just in the time that unrestricted freedom agency will be available next summer.

Treliving stated that he had spoken to J.P. Barry about Backlund and said, "We have lots of time and he is a good player"

"We'll be watching to see where it goes."

To be honest, it's quite possible that the 28 year-old Swedish centre could have been priced out of Calgary by his breakout, 22 goal and 31 assist season.

Two-way luxury that the Flames will be fortunate to continue beyond this season.

Treliving also has $4.5million in cap space, which opens up possibilities that few teams have.

Treliving stated that the breathing space is an asset.

"But just having it doesn't necessarily mean you should spend it. It's also about "Who are we going to spend it on?"

Evidently not Jagr nor Iginla.

Doan will not be there, no matter what the "birthday present" was. what to priority bet on hockey
