How to improve your odds of winning Powerball
It is not easy to beat staggering odds such as those in the US $1.5billion Powerball. But, a repeat lottery winner has revealed that you can increase your chances to win Wednesday's draw.
It doesn't matter if you pray, kill a rabbit, or steal the shoes of a horse. Richard Lustig (author of "Learn To Increase Your Chances Of Winning the Lottery") says the secret to success is to not get too attached to your number choices.
Lustig, who claimed to have won seven lottery grand prize prizes, said that many people make the fatal mistake of basing their numbers on sentimental date dates like birthdays and anniversaries. In a Powerball draw where numbers 1 to 99 are used, this strategy reduces your possible number range down to 1-31.
Powerball is a game where you must pick five numbers between 1 and 69." Lustig stated to CTV News Channel Wednesday. "Calendar numbers players aren’t playing 32 through 69. They are actually decreasing their chances at winning," Lustig said to CTV News Channel.
Lustig suggested that selecting a wide variety of numbers is the best way of approaching the Powerball draw, particularly for Canadians who buy tickets south of Canada.
Lustig advised, "Spread them out across the spectrum of numbers that you have to choose,"
Lustig offers several strategies to increase your long-term lottery winning chances. These are his top 3 tips
Avoid buying lottery tickets "quickly."
You should always play the same numbers. "Because now you have eliminated another set numbers that are unlikely to come up again."
Play regularly.
Lustig claims that he's won millions of dollars using his strategy, but warns that winnings can be spent and you could end up with nothing. He stated that no matter how big your winnings, the money can run out.
Lustig suggests that any lottery winner should first pay off all debts, then invest in a great accountant or financial advisor, and then finally have some fun with the winnings.
Lustig believes that having fun doesn't mean working. He enjoys doing the things that he is passionate about. Lustig said that he plays the lottery and has fun. "Watch TV, play video games."
There is no chance of you winning.
However, Lustig makes winning the lottery seem easy. However, Jeremy Rosenthal, a statistician and professor of statistics says that it's not worth buying a ticket.
Rosenthal actually says that your chances of winning the Powerball is so good, you are more likely to die in a crash, be struck by lightning, or even become prime minister.
Rosenthal said to CTV News Channel, "It's just unbelievably likely that you're going win."
Rosenthal points to the fact that there is an estimated 292,000,000 possible combination combinations in tonight’s draw. This makes Powerball 20 times more difficult than Canada’s Lotto 6/49.
Rosenthal said that Lotto 6/49 is "so unlikely to win, so you shouldn't even purchase a ticket." Rosenthal says this is especially true for Powerball.
Rosenthal stated, "I know how likely it is that I won't have any reason to hope," but he hasn’t purchased a ticket for the jackpot.
He also rejected the idea that somebody, somewhere must win. This person could be yourself.
"It's false that someone's got to win. Because it could be anybody wins and the Jackpot rolls over," he said.
Last week, the Powerball was no exception. Even if there is no winner tonight, the money will be rolled over to the next round until it is.
Rosenthal said that at some point, someone will win and that this could be you. "But, as a probability person you need to think: Well, not just 'could', but what are the odds of winning? You can improve your chances of winning the lottery
