Online or remote bingo is only possible with a license. This includes games where players could participate virtually. A licence is required to allow you to host a game using social media, such as Zoom, or on a video conference using platforms like Zoom.


Warning! Online bingo games that are not licensed must be regulated.

This includes:


Internet

Telephone

Television

Radio

Any other type or technology that enables communication

Why you require a licence

You could be prosecuted or fined for playing bingo despite your good intentions.

What you should do

Online bingo is possible only if you apply for a remote gaming operating licence. You will also need to comply the legal requirements as well as our regulatory codes.

Gambling Act 2005 doesn't provide any legal definition of bingo (opens a new tab). We have worked closely with industry stakeholders to determine three core principles of bingo.


These are:


"Bingo must have equal chance." All players must have the chance to win.


"Bingo must require some participation." This could include players marking their cards or claiming to be winners.


"Bingo games need to have a clear ending point." The game's end should be communicated clearly to players.

A licence is required

In order to provide bingo for commercial gain in Great Britain, you generally need a licence.


A license is required to be able operate any online or'remote bingo site, app, or other gambling sites.


The license must cover all activities. If you provide bingo in a venue, you will also need a license from your local licensing authority.


Sometimes you don't need a license

Some bingo games, such as fundraising bingo, do not require a license.

Bingo games are available to the public. Equipment used to offer such games in gambling venues can be reached via remote communication. Providers must comply with the Act.
