Histories
The Idaho Supreme Court issued a late 1953 decision that banned all forms casino gaming, including slot machines. [1][2][3][4]
Fast three decades later, in January 1983, the legislature rejected a proposal to establish a state lottery. [5] Nearly four decades later, voters approved the lottery proposal in November 1986[6]. But it was declared unconstitutional by Gerald Schroeder,[7] who was to become the chief justice of state supreme courts. The Idaho Supreme Court affirmed his decision,[8] and a state constitution amendment was created. In November 1988, voters approved it.[9][10][11] A mere 200-day later, a record for the lottery industry at that time, the Idaho Lottery started on July 19, 1989 with scratch ticket Match 3. [12][13][14]
Since its inception, the Lottery sold more than $1.8 Billion worth of tickets and has returned more than $437.3 Million to Idaho public schools.
Three states bordering Idaho began lottery play in 1980s prior to Idaho's launch. They were Washington (1982), Oregon (1985), Montana (1987), and Idaho (1982). Wyoming became eligible to play in the lottery in 2014, while Nevada (and Utah) remain unaffected. British Columbia has its own lottery game, while Canada is to the north.
