A new world: Education meets metaverse

A whole new world: Education meets The Metaverse

We are entering the metaverse. Soon, it will be as ubiquitous and widespread as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook (now Meta). To meet the new possibilities, technology will continue to advance in order to provide new immersive and imaginative worlds. Teachers and educators must adapt to these changes. If education is not keeping up with the digital advances, it is the technology that defines what educational opportunity. This is the main reason for "educational" apps, which are meant to be used on smartphones and tablets intended for adults. As the metaverse infrastructure is still being built, researchers, educators and policymakers as well as digital designers have an opportunity to be the ones leading the charge rather than getting caught in the undertow. New ways of connecting the physical world and virtual reality (VR), are needed to maximize the potential of the metaverse.

We offer a roadmap for bringing the best educational practices to the metaverse in this policy brief. A series of established principles, derived from science about how children learn, are suggested to help guide the design and implementation of new educational technology. We also discuss the dangers of designing in this new environment. End result: We challenge anyone creating educational products in the metaverse to collaborate with scientists and educators to ensure that children can experience real human social interaction while they navigate virtual spaces. This will allow them to exercise their agency and see the diversity of what is available.

A VISION

Imagine a circular classroom surrounded with white boards and filled with movable seats. The stories of the Greek myths, Zeus the god-of-the-sky, and the strength of Zeus' son, Hercules, are captivating students.

Instantly, a timeline is projected onto a middle part of the floor. The children get up and move to the present. They are transported into the metaverse of Greek culture. They're surrounded by merchants in markets and carts. From high up on the hill they can see with their own eyes the temples and people who worship them. They investigate, ask questions, ponder, and learn.

This experience was created to satisfy the students' appetites. However, questions remain about how they could possibly discover the richest aspects of Greek life. We wouldn't be able to discover the gods and what was available on the marketplace if we didn't live there. From Chips to Clicks - Increasing Your Online Gaming Excitement
